French Classes with the AF de GR

The AF de GR offers five levels of French classes: Beginners I & II, Refresh Your French I & II, and Converse in French.
Sessions: Classes are offered in three 8-week sessions each year: Fall, Winter, and Spring.
Our teachers: Linda FitzGerald, Isabelle Martirossian, Kait Polzin, and Elizabeth Hill (on maternity leave until spring 2027).
Registration: Sign up for classes below (scroll down). (No refunds after the 2nd week of classes.)
Registration deadline: A week before the session begins.
Location: Classes meet at Cascade Fellowship Church, 6655 Cascade Rd SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546.
Beginners I WAITLIST: The Beginners 1 class is for anyone who wants to learn French and has very little or no previous experience. It will cover the alphabet, greetings, numbers, dates, basic grammar (ER verbs, avoir & être, noun markers, adjectives) and vocabulary related to leisure time activities. This class covers chapters 1 & 2 of Edito Méthode de français, A1, textbook and workbook (cahier). Level A1 on the European Scale. Limited to 15 participants.
Fall 2026 Session with Linda FitzGerald: Mondays, Sept 21 - Nov 9, 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.
Beginners II: The Beginners 2 class is for anyone who wants to learn French and already has some basic French. This class builds on Beginners 1, and covers slightly more advanced grammar (ER verbs, possessive adjectives, IR verbs, adverbs, commands) and vocabulary related to family and food. This class covers chapters 3 & 4 of Edito Méthode de français, A1, textbook and workbook (cahier). Level A1 on the European Scale. Limited to 15 participants.
Fall 2026 Session with Linda FitzGerald: Mondays, Sept 21 - Nov 9,, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.
Refresh Your French I: The Refresh I class assumes that you know how to ask others for basic information and how to talk about your family and friends (Level A1.2 on the European Scale). The grammar will include agreement and placement of adjectives, demonstrative adjectives, direct object pronouns, the near future and recent past (venir de), simple IR verbs and the passé composé. This class covers Unités 5, 6, & 7 in the Edito Méthode de français, A1, textbook and workbook (cahier). Limited to 15 participants.
Fall 2026 Session with Isabelle Martirossian: Mondays, Sept 28 - Nov 16, 5:30-7:00 p.m.
Refresh Your French II WAITLIST: The Refresh II class focuses on improving your conversation skills (comprehension, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluidity) with grammar study using practical topics from everyday life (Level A1.2-A2 on the European scale). This class covers Unités 8, 9, & 10 in the Edito Méthode de français, A1, textbook and workbook (cahier). Limited to 15 participants.
Fall 2026 Session with Isabelle Martirossian: Mondays, Sept 28 - Nov 16, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.
Converse in French WAITLIST: The Converse class focuses on conversing in French and improving listening skills (Level A2-B1 on the European Scale). The class is conducted almost entirely in French, and students typically read about 10 pages of text in French per week and discuss themes around cultural values, historical and current events, and things going on in their own lives. The class is not grammar-focused, but the instructor may occasionally provide grammatical explanations as needed. Limited to 15 participants.
Fall 2026 Session with Kait Polzin: Thursdays, Sept 17 - 24, (no class Oct 1), Oct 8 - Nov 12, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.
Cost:
Members: $120 by check, or $125 online (includes $5 fee to defray the transaction costs).
Non Members: $145 by check, or $150 online (includes $25 annual membership fee plus $5 fee to defray online costs).
