The AF de GR offers three levels of French classes: Beginner, Refresh Your French, and Converse in French.

Sessions: Classes are offered in three 8-week sessions each year: Fall, Winter, and Spring.

Our teachers: Elizabeth Hill, Isabelle Martirossian, and Linda FitzGerald.

Registration: Sign up for classes below (scroll down).

Registration deadline: A week before the session begins.

Location: Classes meet in person at Heather Hills Retirement Village: 1055 Forest Hills Ave. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546. Beginning in April 2024, classes will meet at Cascade Fellowship Church, 6655 Cascade Rd SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546.

Beginners: The Beginners class is for anyone who wants to start learning French (Level A1 on the European Scale). This class uses the Edito Méthode de français, A1, textbook and workbook (cahier). Limited to 15 participants.

  • Fall 2023 Session with Alison Bristol: Tuesdays, Sept. 19—Nov. 7, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.

  • Winter 2024 Session with Isabelle Martirossian: Tuesdays, Jan. 23-March 12, 7-8:30 p.m.

  • Spring 2024 Session with Linda FitzGerald: Tuesdays, April 23—June 11, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.

Refresh Your French: The Refresh class assumes that you know how to ask others for basic information and how to talk about your family and friends (Level A1-A2 on the European Scale). This class uses the Edito Méthode de français, A1, textbook and workbook (cahier). Limited to 15 participants.

  • Fall 2023 session with Isabelle Martirossian: Mondays, Sept. 25— Nov. 13, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.

  • Winter 2024 Session with Isabelle Martirossian: Mondays, Jan. 22—March 11, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.

  • Spring 2024 Session with Isabelle Martirossian: Mondays, April 1— May 20, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.

Converse in French: The Converse class focuses on conversing in French and improving listening skills (Level B1-B2 on the European Scale). Students typically read about 10 pages of text per week and discuss themes around cultural values, historical and current events, and things going on in their own lives. The class typically does not get into grammar or do vocab lists, but learns new words as they go and tries to incorporate them. Limited to 15 participants.

Cost: 

Members: $100 by check, or $105 online (includes $5 fee to defray the transaction costs). 

Non Members: $125 by check, or $130 online (includes $25 annual membership fee plus $5 fee to defray online costs).
